Record numbers fledges in Louisiana
Great news out of Louisiana. The reestablished resident Whooping Crane population in southwestern Louisiana fledged 10 young this year. A new record.
The historic population was extirpated in the 1950s. This release program to reestablish resident birds began in 2011 and the population now stands at 84.
Most people are only aware of the larger population (the source of these birds) that migrates from northern Canada to Texas.
I have had the good fortune of hunting in the area and hearing and seeing these magnificent birds.
