Parasitism - An Alternative Reproductive Strategy
Laying parasitic eggs is a common reproductive strategy in ducks.
Conspecific parasitism is laying eggs in another nest of the same species (like the Whistling Ducks); heterospecific is laying in the nest of another species (Redheads in Canvasbacks).
Both types of parasitism are common in waterfowl, but not in other birds.
More on this tomorrow.
