Delta Waterfowl Receives Grant for Habitat Conservation from Bass Pro Shop and Cabela’s Outdoor Fund

Generous support will advance Delta’s policy efforts to keep at-risk shallow wetlands from being drained

BISMARCK, NORTH DAKOTA — A generous grant from the Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s Outdoor Fund is boosting efforts by Delta Waterfowl to conserve critical breeding duck habitat in the prairie pothole region. The $100,000 grant marks the second year in a row that Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s Outdoor Fund has supported Delta’s habitat conservation policy work.

“We sincerely appreciate the generous support from the Bass Pro Shops/Cabela’s Outdoor Fund to aid Delta’s work to develop new tools to conserve the small prairie wetlands most important to breeding ducks,” said John Devney, chief policy officer for Delta Waterfowl. “With this investment, Delta is advancing new small wetland programming in Manitoba, Alberta, and across the U.S. prairies, which has the promise to greatly accelerate real and meaningful conservation work with prairie farmers.”

Delta’s habitat conservation policy work focuses on small, shallow wetlands that are most at risk of drainage but proven most critical to duck production. Ongoing and persistent wetland loss is negatively impacting the prairie pothole region, where up to 70% of North America’s ducks hatch. Recent estimates show an annual loss rate of 0.88% of wetlands in cropland across the Canadian prairie pothole region.

Delta works with farmers, policymakers, and conservation leaders to protect small, shallow wetlands through the Working Wetlands Program in the United States and the Shallow Wetland Incentive Program in Canada.

Bass Pro Shops and Cabela's Outdoor Fund partners with passionate customers and leading conservation partners to create transformative actions for wildlife and the outdoors. With conservation partners like Delta Waterfowl, the Outdoor Fund takes action to create meaningful outcomes toward wildlife and habitat conservation, increasing participation in outdoor recreation, and advocating for fishing and hunting rights.

“The continued support of Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s Outdoor Fund clearly demonstrates their strong commitment to waterfowl habitat and hunters,” said Scott Vance, development director for Delta Waterfowl. “Delta’s habitat programs protect the most critically important duck breeding habitats to ensure we’ll have plentiful and sustainable duck populations for future generations.”
